Research confirms that most people who decide to make a
lifestyle change will tell at least a few others about their intentions. Others,
will have more success with keeping
their intentions to lose weight to themselves.
The first group believes
that telling others about their weight loss efforts will keep them accountable.
The second group might be concerned that co-workers, friends, and even family member may
sabotage their efforts at times, even unintentionally.
Studies confirmed that if you announce your goals to others,
you are less likely to make them happen because you lose motivation. Really? Yes,
really. This is thought to happen because announcing goals satisfies a person’s
self-identity just enough to prevent them performing the hard work to achieve
those goals.
I think it is a personal preference and everyone must do
what works best for them.
What do you think? Is sharing your weight loss goals with a
loved one more likely to keep you accountable, or are you afraid they might
sabotage your efforts?
Well, I don't know about everybody else, but when I give away what I'm intending to do, I don't usually do it - especially if I'm bragging.
ReplyDeleteI think that when I spread it around a little, I don't feel like I have to do it because I already got the benefit of the bragging rights. This wasn't a conscious thing, but over time I just noticed it about myself, and I got leery of telling people anything I wanted to do.
But I also noticed that if I tell someone I'm going to do something, and they give me some kind of vibe like, you're not really serious, or something like that, then I really back off of my plans right away. And I never tell them, but it's true.
I agree with Julian that it's easier for me to keep my most important plans to myself, because someone always rains on my parade. But I have a question now that we're into the holidays. How can you possibly avoid telling someone if everyone notices that you're not eating the usual holiday food? Or do you just join in to whatever anyone else is doing on those specific days and then get back on the wagon the next day?
ReplyDeleteSharing your goals helps big time. It gives you accountability. Studies show that the person who actually achieves weight loss and transition into a healthier lifestyle is the person who connected into some form of accountability program.
ReplyDeleteYou are right Julia. Sharing your goals with friends and regularly updating them about your progress really boosts your chances of actually achieving them.
ReplyDeleteYou have to pick the right person or people to share your goals with.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing blog that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free.
