Stick to healthy eating strategies when on the go

Travelling for the holidays can mean plenty of hearty family dinners and brunches where the calories can add up fast.

That’s why it’s important to have a game plan for sticking to your healthy eating plan when on the go. Instead of relying on the nutritionally corrupt offerings at gas stations, convenience stores, vending machines or overpriced airport bakeries to quell a rumbling stomach, pack your own arsenal of healthy snacks. I take apples with me when I travel by car.

Planning ahead can help you eat healthier. If you can't prepare ahead, choose wisely. Rather than the chips, smoothie, or candy bar, pick whole fruit or salad. Instead of reaching for juice or soda drink water.

It’s important to stick to healthy eating strategies when on the go. Whether you’re driving to the in-laws or boarding a flight to a far-flung sunny location as part of the rising tide of running tourism, travelling can throw a wrench into your diet.

If you don’t stick to your healthy eating plan when on the go, you risk bringing home a few extra pounds as souvenirs from your holiday.

  1. I have such a problem of just eating tons of fast food when I'm travelling. Just horrendously unhealthy, greasy, fatty fast food. It really never occurred to me to just pack my own food. Maybe I was too lazy in the past, but I've never done it. I think I'll start doing this when I travel for Christmas this year. Thanks!

    1. I am the same way. It is hard to get away from greasy drive up food, but if you break that habit, you are going to be much better off!

  2. I agree with you that planning ahead is key. People mainly lose their focus because of their lack of planning. By setting aside time each day to plan meals and snacks for the next day, you can prevent this. A weekly menu board is an effective tool for meal planning. It can make planning healthy meals easier. It can also help you stay focused and prevent you from eating unhealthy foods on impulse.

  3. Traveling doesn’t have to result in unhealthy eating. The key is to fill up on healthy foods when you can and make smart dining choices throughout your trip. By planning ahead and knowing your options, you can take a break from your stressful routine but not from your healthy eating.

  4. I feel a bit silly that I never thought of packing my own food in the car. The reason it's so easy to fall into the fast food trap when on a road trip is because of the abundance of drive throughs, and the fact that you don't even have to step out of your car. But bringing the healthy food with you means that you don't even have to veer off your course to eat, and then there won't be a problem at all. This is definitely something that I need to do when I'm going places now. Like when I was on a five hour train trip the other day, if I'd brought my own food, I wouldn't have had that Coke and chips.

  5. I've been on many trips and to be honest, I don't eat a lot of food while driving. If I do, I usually stop at a restaurant just to relax a bit from driving. Driving for long hours can be a total pain. I don't go to fast food places like McDonalds or Burger King. Instead I go to the mom and pop type joints where they offer healthier alternatives.

Anyways, I don't like to eat and drive at the same time anyways, so I tend to not even bother with it.
