Unhealthy food decisions while away from home

Last week was a perfect example that eating healthy while away from home could be difficult.

I was away from home for a week and found myself in this challenging situation again.

Hotel rooms are really tough places to make quality food choices and eating generally means restaurants, fast food places, or hotel lounges.

I tried to stick to a healthy eating routine but it was impossible. Limited time, not knowing where to buy healthy food, and eating between meetings prompted me to make hasty, unhealthy food decisions. I ended up with consuming processed foods, heavy fats, and unhealthy preservatives.

  1. Wow !!!,
recollecting your views about healthy diet and eating habits at all from many years ago I can see you are a changed man, just the opposite of who you were then...

Funnywise, that stuff you are so enthused about now, you found very funny just a few years ago... People change, I'm glad you did too, real way to go... to never stray away from...

  2. Yes! Finding healthy eating options on the road is a huge challenge. It's all vending machines and fast food! If there's any way to hit the grocery store while travelling, I usually try to stop by and at least work in some fresh produce to my diet.

  3. Wow, you read my mind. I had this same experience recently! I was stuck in a hotel room with only cashews nuts and chips. In hindsight, I could have been more prepared if I picked up something healthy earlier in the day. Preparation is key to eating well!

  4. It is almost impossible to eat healthy on the road, which is why I've decided to start packing apples with me on trips. At least that's healthier than fast food.

  5. I was in the hospital a few years back for about a week, and they didn't have the greatest food. They served me their food and I hated it, but if I wanted something that tasted good, I had to go to a vending machine to get food, and they had some of the most unhealthy food around. You'd think for being a hospital they'd have healthier food.

  6. Recently, while traveling on a week-long marathon visit with family and friends, I found myself faced with having to eat meals and snacks on the run and at social events. It was great fun, but I decided to challenge myself to maintain and not gain weight during this fun week of being exposed to amazing calorie-laden foods. In the past, I have typically treated vacations as a time to cut loose and enjoy the rich foods and countless treats from which I usually refrain. Now, I am finding it is harder to get away with this cavalier approach without gaining weight. I am also reminded that the stakes are higher now since I have passed the age when my father was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. So, my new mantra changes to “maintain, don’t gain” on vacation.
